The signature event is Opal’s Walk for Freedom LIVE, taking place from Fort Worth’s Historic Southside on Monday, June 19th, featuring the legendary 96-year-old ‘Grandmother of Juneteenth’ Dr. Opal Lee. The title sponsor comes with the prestige of presenting Opal’s Walk Live. The celebration kicks off on June 2nd with an Ecumenical Breakfast of Prayer Service that unites us in prayer to celebrate the unity it took to gain freedom. The Miss JuneteenthDFW Pageant will follow on June 3rd at the University of Texas-Arlington Rosebud Theater. The title of National Miss Juneteenth was won by the reigning Miss JuneteenthDFW Queen Madison Corzine. Delegates showcase their abilities while competing for scholarships to further their education at this pageant. The organization believes in facilitating opportunities for the youth, and with the fine arts workshop Your Voice Unleashed, they provide tools for success in today’s challenging times. The National Art Competition and Exhibition is a call out for artists of all ages to depict what Juneteenth means to them. On June 24th, the Empowering You job, college, financial and health fair will include successful entrepreneurs and CEOs delivering insightful lectures and sharing impactful knowledge on boosting careers and businesses.
Juneteenth celebrations are most known for food and the organization doesn’t disappoint in that regard. By hosting the Freedom First BBQ Cook-Off where contestants will compete for bragging rights and the winners will be announced at the Taste of Juneteenth Food Festival, communities are encouraged to connect and network while enjoying a plethora of food vendors and live cooking demonstrations that explore cuisines of the African diaspora.
