Family Statement: Colorado Bureau of Investigation to Conduct Statutory Review into Death of Megan Trussell

Megan Trussell

(YourDigitalWall Editorial):- Denver, Colorado Jan 9, 2026 (Issuewire.com) – The Colorado Bureau of Investigation will conduct a statutory case review into the death of Megan Trussell, following a request made under Colorado law and sustained advocacy from her family.

The review will be conducted through the Colorado Department of Public Safety pursuant to Colorado Revised Statutes (C.R.S.) § 24-33.5-2602(2)(c)(II), which requires an independent review in cases involving Indigenous persons whose deaths were ruled a suicide or overdose when concerning or suspicious circumstances may be present.

Megan Trussell’s family says: “Since early last year, our family has asked for additional review from every appropriate authority — the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, the Boulder County Coroner, the District Attorney’s Office and the Governor’s Office — and were denied fair review each time. It should not take invoking a statute–one we had to locate on our own–to secure an independent review, but we are relieved this process is finally moving forward.”

While welcoming the review, the family expresses continued concern about the scope and rigor of the prior investigation. “Our experience to date has left us cautious. We are deeply concerned that this review could simply re-examine existing police and coroner reports without addressing the serious discrepancies and, frankly, lack of investigation that have persisted since the beginning. We are asking for a meaningful, independent review — not just a box check.”

The family credited support from Colorado Senator Janice Marchman, who has advocated on their behalf and worked to elevate the case through appropriate state channels.

“Megan’s family has shown extraordinary persistence in seeking accountability,” Marchman said. “This statutory review exists for exactly these situations, when families raise legitimate concerns and deserve a transparent, independent process.”

A press conference will be held at 2:30 p.m. January 10 outside The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (690 Kipling Street, Lakewood, Colo., 80215), where family members and Senator Marchman will be available to answer questions from the media.
