Inspired by Dr. Opal Lee, this globally recognized initiative commemorates the end of slavery in the United States while amplifying the ongoing journey toward freedom, equality, and justice.
“Juneteenth is not just a day to remember the past; it is a day to commit to action in the present,” said Dr. Lee, affectionally known as the Grandmother of Juneteenth. “By coming together in cities across the nation, we honor those who fought for freedom and empower the next generation to carry forward the work of justice, civic participation, and unity.”
Through this partnership, the Freedom Center will help anchor the Cincinnati activation with intentional programming that connects history to present-day action. The day will begin with an opening ceremony featuring community leaders, cultural voices, and special remarks that set the tone for reflection and unity. Participants will then join the symbolic walk, representing the distance tied to the delayed freedom of enslaved people–creating a shared, intergenerational moment of purpose.
Beyond the walk, attendees can expect a dynamic, family-friendly experience designed to educate, inspire, and activate:
- Youth & Education Zone: Interactive workshops, storytelling sessions, and hands-on activities focused on Black history, civic leadership, and cultural expression.
- Live Performances & Cultural Showcases: Music, spoken word, and artistic performances celebrating Black culture, resilience, and freedom.
- Community Engagement Village: Local nonprofits, civic organizations, and advocacy groups offering resources, volunteer opportunities, and pathways to get involved.
- Health & Wellness Activations: On-site resources promoting physical, mental, and community well-being.
- Freedom Marketplace: Artisans, and food vendors showcasing culture, creativity, and entrepreneurship.
Attendees will also have opportunities to engage directly with historians and representatives from the Freedom Center, bridging the legacy of the Underground Railroad to today’s movements for justice and equity.
This year, the walk will take place in seven cities across the United States, creating a national celebration of freedom, resilience, and hope. Residents of Cincinnati are invited to register, walk, and be part of a growing movement that celebrates community, cultural awareness, and the collective responsibility we have to uphold liberty and justice for all. Together, this collaboration creates more than an event–it’s a living, breathing experience that honors the past while mobilizing the present and future.
