At the end of the first quarter, Sony Interactive Entertainment issued a patent with the INPI in Brazil on November 5, 2019, in which the design copyright stated, ‘Configuration applied to/in data recording and storage equipment’. Well, coincidentally, the licensing of the Developers Kit of the Sony PlayStation 5 belonged to the same body.
The most surprising fact was that the application’s category was intentionally set as Class 14.99, with the word ‘Miscellaneous’ inscribed on it. The classification is termed as ‘Electronic Game Accessories’ in Japan.
Before looking deep into this matter, we must focus on the inventor of the new product who happens to be the senior art director of Sony Interactive Entertainment, Yujin Morisawa. He is connected to the products related to the PlayStation brand. These facts only indicate one thing that Sony is prepping this device for a new PlayStation product. Sony uncovers a new game cartridge for an unidentified game system and the question is could this be for the PlayStation 5?
Sony did make use of small cartridges on previous occasions. For example, cartridges were used in the Sony Vita gaming device. In the last year, Sony made a big announcement of stopping the production of physical games.
Fans are uncertain about the possibility of Sony Vita’s successor. The design indicates a cartridge design. Since its patent was released without any preparation, the appearance of the devkit is still not sure. This cartridge design can also be for the PlayStation 5.
It is important to consider that Sony patents so much hardware that never makes it to the market. So, the fans shouldn’t be surprised if this new design doesn’t make it to the market.
PlayStation 5 is set to be released in 2020. No details about the machine have been given out yet. Sony has put little to nothing efforts into the new establishment, which indicates no replacement for Vita. Since Sony is working momentarily, the fans should lookout on the upcoming patent, apart from the Nintendo Switch Lite. Only the company knows whether it would be PlayStation 5 or something else.
