It is a 2023 American drama film directed by Erica Tremblay starring Lily Gladstone as Jax who is seen to be taking care of her niece Roki, played by Isabel DeRoyOlson during the sudden disappearance of her sister played by Shea Whigham. The movie revolves around the life of these women and how Jax helps her niece to prepare for a powwow and also devotes her time to finding her sister in the Seneca Cayuga Nation Reservation. It depicts the cruel situation of Indigenous women and how they are easily murdered or harmed. It will be available for streaming from June 28th on Apple TV+.
Am I OK?
This is a 2022 American comedy-drama film directed by Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne starring Dakota Johnson as Lucy and Sonoya Mizonu as Jane. The movie depicts the lives of these two as very close friends and how their friendship will be thrown under the bus when Jane has to move to London and Lucy is in a very icky situation about her sexuality. Their friendship goes through a rough patch which is again resolved through nothing but friendship and love for each other. It will be available for streaming from June 6th on Max.
Godzilla Minus One
This is a 2023 Japanese epic film directed, written, and visual effects done by Takashi Yamazaki. The movie premiered at the Shinjuku Toho Building on October 18, 2023. The plot of the movie is set in post-war Japan. The story revolves around a former kamikaze pilot who had lost his family and was working as a mine-keeper abroad where he meets Noriko who has also lost her family except her son and how Shikishima, the pilot takes on his shoulder the responsibility of destroying the huge dinosaur-like creature, Godzilla after he gets the news of Noriko’s presumed death at the hand of this monster. It has been available on Netflix from June 1st.
Aftersun
This is a 2022 drama film directed and written by Charlotte Wells. This movie revolves around the protagonist and shows the journey of them growing up so it can be called a coming-of-age drama. The story depicts the relationship between an 11-year-old daughter Sophie played by Frankie Corio and her 31-year-old father Calum played by Paul Mescal. In the movie, Sophie goes to a Turkish holiday resort in London to visit her father on his 31st birthday while capturing her visit with a MiniDV camera. The shots from the camera are interspersed throughout the film. It will be available on Netflix from June 24.
La La Land
This is a 2016 American musical romantic comedy-drama film directed and written by Damien Chazelle. It stars Ryan Gosling as a passionate jazz pianist Sebastian and Emma Roberts playing the part of Mia Dolan, an aspiring actress. According to the blog of ‘Indie Wire,’ the story has a bitter-sweet taste to it as it reflects the unfinished love stories or the paths not taken between the two main characters. Their falling in love and trying to support each other while struggling to keep each other’s dreams alive fills the audience with hope. Ultimately their love story takes a different path that takes them both away from each other but still with love in their hearts for each other. It has been available on Netflix from June 1st.
Hit Man
This is a 2023 American romantic black comedy film directed and produced by Richard Linklater. The screenplay was co-written by Richard and Glen Powell who also plays the role of the protagonist Gary. The story revolves around Gary, a professor of psychology and philosophy at the University of New Orleans. He also works as a mole for the police and through this role, he comes to know of Madison, played by Adria Arjona who is in an unhappy marriage with the risk of losing her life as her husband Ray wants to kill her. Gary creates a fake persona of a hitman called Ron while talking to Madison and falls in love with her. The movie has been available on Netflix from June 7th.
The Beach Bum
This movie is a 2019 American stoner comedy film directed and written by Harmony Korine which stars Matthew McConaughey as the protagonist Moondog a stoner poet who is trying to finish his new book along with Isla Fisher as his wife Minnie. The film also stars Snoop Dogg, Zac Efron, Mertin Lawrence, Jonah Hill, and Jimmy Buffett along with others. The story is about Moondog, a drug-abusing poet who has to finish his new book to inherit his dead wife’ inherited money. According to the blog by ‘Indie Wire’, even though the movie is not a so-called box office hit, the only thing that is worth watching is McConaughey’s acting as Moondog. It is not clear from his acting whether it was McConaughey playing Moondog or was it Moondog, who has been playing McConaughey throughout his life. This movie has been streaming on Amazon Prime and Mubi.
Perfect days
It is a 2023 drama directed by Wim Wenders from a script that was co-written by Wenders and Takuma Takasaki. It is a co-production between Japan and Germany whose story follows the life of Hirayama played by Koji Yakusho, a public toilet cleaner. The movie revolves around Hiramaya’s daily life and how he is present in the present. There is no flashback or manipulation of emotions; it simply depicts the beauty of staying in the present. The Japanese concept of Komorebi describes the sunlight shining through the leaves and branches of trees, creating overlapped layers of light and darkness that can only be witnessed in that very moment and which fades away with each passing glance. The film also ends with the definition of Komorebi. This movie has been streaming on Hulu from 6th June according to the blog of ‘Indie Wire’.
